The National Federation of Independent Business/California released the following statement today about Governor Jerry Brown’s State of the State speech:

“It is assuring to hear Governor Brown say that the state should live within its means. This is something that small business owners live with daily, and so should government,” said John Kabateck, NFIB/CA Executive Director.  “While the budget may appear to be more balanced than in recent years, there are still many variables that affect it including the federal government, the courts, or another economic downturn, so it is imperative that we strengthen small business to keep our budget whole. The Governor is right to urge fiscal discipline during these still very uncertain times for Californians.”

“We agree with the Governor that we also need to rethink and streamline our regulatory procedures, particularly the California Environmental Quality Act.,” Kabateck continued.  “As the Governor said – ‘Our approach needs to be based more on consistent standards that provide greater certainty and cut needless delays.’ We believe that this same thinking should apply to AB 32.”

“We look forward to working with the Governor and Legislature in the months ahead to find ways to reduce the barrage of new rules every year.  Entrepreneurism needs to be encouraged so that small businesses and jobs can prosper and grow and certainty is restored to Main Street and all of our communities.”
